Email from Dan Mumford

Same questions as I asked Joe - wanted different opinions on the same matters.

Hi Steph,

hope this helps!

- Are there any particular influences that have led to your current style of work?
--Comic books and 80's films mainly are what influenced me in my work, stuff that was around me growing up.

- Do you find your style has changed much over the years?
--Yeah it got super detailed and then somewhat simplified and now its somewhere in the middle, its always changing a bit though.

- Do you feel that location has an impact on gaining work / clients?
--No not at all, the internet means it doesnt matter where you are in the world, obviously that depends on the work you do, but in my line of work it doesnt have an impact.

- Can you roughly describe your working process?
--Its quite simple really, i come up with an idea concept in my head, sketch it out roughly till i feel the composition is working and then i work off of that sketch and make it something more finalised.

- What are your initial concerns when approaching a brief?
--How to overcome any potential issues or shortcomings the idea might have, sometimes a client might have an idea that doesnt quite work and i have to make it work. I think thats the only issue i generally have.

- Have you always been freelance - or did you start in a studio? Recommendations straight out of uni?
--I have always been freelance. I Would say even before you leave uni you should be trying to get freelance work, trying to do small jobs for people you know where you can, it all helps in getting you ready for when you leave uni.

- Can you describe the studio space - better to work around lots of others?
--Its a very large stduio with about 25 people, we all have our own space and plenty of room for all of our stuff, but its definitely nice to be around other people, much better than working at home on your own.

- Any tips on trying to make it?
--Not really, i would just say work hard and try and be the best at what you do.

It's good to get a different perspective and again is shaping my decisions about trying to make it as a freelancer. It's also giving me thought for what to do immediately after graduating and in terms of where to work from etc.
