What skills do you have and how they relate to the needs of your client group?
To start with it might not be a skill, but in anything you've got to have passion and this will really give me a starting point to connect with bands / artists etc and help me work better collaboratively to create the 'perfect' design solution to fit their needs / brief.
When given a starting point I feel my ideas generation is really coming on and I am starting to produce much better work than I did because my ideas are stronger.
Another skill that suits me in this niche is having a strong understanding of the music industry - always looking out for new music, surrounding myself with everything to do with music - magazines, checking music websites, myspace, going to gigs etc etc. I therefore feel that I can connect with bands and feel that my skills lie in the fact that I'm interested in the bands themselves, rather than driven by money and big record labels. I feel I would be able to make bands / artists feel comfortable and feel they are being listened to and not dictated at.
What skills are needed and what skills do you want to develop?
I really need to develop my software skills. I'm really driven by video at the moment and if I want to create cutting edge music videos then I definitely need to improve! Likewise when it comes to print - I've seen a lot of futurist design work - (Delphic) and I just wouldn't know how to do that. I need to learn to simplify also...
What are your professional/creative aims and how do they relate to the needs of the client group?
I think that with "the death / decline" of record labels that artists are turning more and more to freelancers - this essentially is what I want to end up doing - I want to be known as someone who can communicate in a professional manner on the basis that I will listen to an extent to what the client wants and create cutting edge videos, artwork, promotional work that people keep coming back for.
Product: Music Promotion / videos etc
Place: I want to remain fairly northern, but reckon I'll have to move to LDN!
Promotion: Website, hopefully through word of mouth as well - if one piece is great hopefully other bands will come knocking!
Price: Affordable for small unsigned bands, but if anyone massive decides to have my work used then the rate will go up.
have you managed to gain any f/l design work for any bands? would be great professional experience and would add to your portfolio.use your newly found knowledge to negotiate costs/brief etc.
